2026 Rivian R2 Profile

The 2026 Rivian R2.

Rivian is rolling out the all-new 2026 R2 midsize electric SUV. The R2 blends performance, capability, and utility into one adventure-ready package at a lower price point. It seats five people and is optimized for both daily driving and weekend exploration. The R2 represents Rivian expanding its EV lineup beyond the premium R1T pickup and R1S SUV models.

What’s New

The R2 rides on an all-new midsize vehicle platform developed by Rivian. It consolidates parts through intelligent design elements like high-pressure diecastings, a structural battery pack, and simplified closure systems. This allowed Rivian to dramatically reduce costs and complexity compared to the R1 vehicles.

Exterior Design

The silhouette and face maintain Rivian’s distinctive brand identity. A key highlight is the powered rear glass that fully drops into the liftgate, enabling unique open-air driving experiences and easier loading of cargo. The overall look is instantly recognizable as a Rivian while adapting the design language to the midsize SUV segment.

Interior and Cargo Space

Inside, the focus is on easy use and premium sustainable materials. The first and second rows fold completely flat to maximize cargo capacity for gear, enabling activities like car camping. R2 prioritizes rear legroom for comfortable long trips. Unique features include Rivian’s new haptic steering wheel controls.

Battery and Range

R2 will offer two battery pack sizes, with the larger achieving over 300 miles of EPA-estimated range. Rivian is using its new 4695 cylindrical cells that improve energy density and output over previous designs.

Performance and Driving

Three motor configurations will be available – single motor RWD, dual motor AWD, and a tri-motor setup with two motors in the rear. The quickest tri-motor variant can hit 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds. DC fast charging at up to 200kW allows 10-80% replenishment in under 30 minutes.

Advanced Tech and Safety

R2 debuts Rivian’s latest self-driving hardware and software. This includes 11 cameras, 5 radars, and more powerful compute enabling enhanced autonomous capabilities. Like other Rivians, it is designed for frequent over-the-air software updates to improve functionality over time.

Pricing

Rivian is targeting a starting price around $45,000 for the R2, making it significantly more affordable than the R1 lineup while still delivering the brand’s performance and capability hallmarks.
